The Ukrainian Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, in collaboration with Lagos Free Zone, a venture of the Tolaram Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct a grain terminal in the Lekki port, Nigeria. This collaboration comes in the wake of the destruction of Ukraine’s food export terminals and aims to rebuild and strengthen Ukraine’s position as the largest exporter and producer of wheat, prior to the Russian invasion.
The MoU was officially signed during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, with Taras Vysotsky, the Ukrainian First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, representing the Ukrainian side. The partnership between the ministry and Lagos Free Zone seeks to develop the necessary infrastructure to ensure continuous supplies of Ukrainian agricultural products to Nigeria and the wider African continent. Their primary objective is to enhance food security in regions facing the greatest need.
With the world’s population steadily increasing, Vysotsky emphasized the pivotal role of the Ukrainian agrarian sector in contributing to global food security. The Lekki Deep Sea Port, Nigeria’s first fully automated port, serves as the location for the construction of the grain terminal. The port project is a collaborative effort involving the Nigerian government, Lagos state, the owners of Lagos Free Zone (Tolaram Group headquartered in Singapore), and the China Harbor Engineering Company.
