In Ogun State, a gang of ten senior secondary school students reportedly attacked and beat their teacher, Kolawole Shonuga, after he caught one of them, Ashimi Adebanjo, cheating during an examination at Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.
Following the incident, the students waited for the teacher after school hours and assaulted him at the school’s gate. One of the students, Kazeem Adelaja, allegedly hit the teacher on the head with a stick, while others participated in the beating.
The police from the Remo Division responded to the incident and arrested the ten students involved. The teacher, Kolawole Shonuga, had made a formal report on the assault to the Remo Police Division.
The State Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Felix Agbesanwa, expressed disapproval of the incident and emphasized that students who attack their teachers should face the consequences of their actions. He stated that such behavior is unacceptable, and the law must be enforced to deter similar incidents in the future.
The state government also condemned the act of violence and assured that it would not tolerate indiscipline among students across the state. The government had previously taken steps to address similar issues, including introducing a compulsory undertaking form signed by students and their parents to curb hooliganism in schools.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, urged parents to counsel their children against engaging in such violent acts, as any student found misbehaving in school would face appropriate consequences.
