A lecturer at the Department of Curriculum Studies of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Dr. Samuel Abiye, has been suspended by the management for three months and placed on half salary, over an allegation of sexual extortion for grades from one of his female students.
It was gathered that the lecturer was recorded by a female student who he promised to help pass his course and all other courses taught by other lecturers in their department on condition of sexual gratification.
Abiye was said to have reportedly directed the female student to meet him at the King James Hotels towards Eagle Cement area of Rumuolumeni, in PortHarcourt Local Government Area of Rivers, for the deal. The girl, instead of yielding to the request, forwarded her recorded conversation with the lecturer to the authorities.
The university has, therefore, directed that all courses taught by Dr. Abiye for the first semester of 2020/2021 be re-graded through conference marking to be supervised by the Dean of Education Faculty.
A statement by the Vice Chancellor, Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, said: “All Abiye’s courses and supervisees have been reassigned to other lecturers in his department.
“The matter has been referred to the University Staff Disciplinary Committee for further investigation to determine his fate.”
