President Bola Tinubu recently appointed Jim Osayande Obazee as a Special Investigator to look into the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Related Entities in a significant move to fight against corruption.
In a letter dated 28th July 2023, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of Obazee’s role in blocking leakages from the CBN and ensuring probity within key government business entities.
The appointment gives Obazee the authority to investigate corrupt individuals and establishments, both in the private and public sectors, to uncover the extent of public wealth held by such entities. This step aligns with the objectives outlined in Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution, which prioritizes combating corruption for the betterment of the nation.
To ensure the investigation’s effectiveness, Obazee will work with a competent and experienced team and collaborate with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies. This approach underscores the seriousness with which the government is addressing the issue.
Moreover, President Tinubu’s directive to suspend the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, since June 2023 adds another layer of significance to this investigation.
Emefiele’s custody by the Department of State Service (DSS) and subsequent court arraignment, despite being granted bail, has sparked public interest and raised questions about the alleged corruption within the CBN.
