According to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), a total of 529 foreign-trained medical and dental graduates did not pass the assessment examination conducted recently. The two-day examination, which took place in July, saw 704 medical and 30 dental graduates participating.
However, the results showed that only 189 medical graduates and 16 dental graduates passed the assessment exam, while 515 medical graduates and 14 dental graduates failed. This pass rate of 27.4% was deemed poor by the MDCN Registrar, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi. Despite this, he emphasized the importance of the assessment exam to ensure the competence and proficiency of doctors and dentists practicing in Nigeria and to safeguard the nation’s healthcare system.
Dr Sanusi further explained that such assessment exams are a global practice, required in cases where medical professionals train in one jurisdiction but wish to practice in another. Even experienced professionals may need to undergo similar evaluations when moving to different countries.
