A 40-year-old secondary school teacher, Olaniran Adewale, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for sexually assaulting young girls. Olaniran, who taught Mathematics at Ebenezer Grammar School in Abeokuta, is accused of luring girls into his home and raping them.
The case was reported by the Director of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Kazeem Wonuola, who informed the police about Olaniran’s alleged actions. On the day the police went after the suspect, they caught him allegedly in the act of attempting to rape another girl, and they had to rescue the victim.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun, has a strong stance against sexual offenses and has overseen numerous cases charged to court. Non-Governmental Organizations supporting women’s rights have also provided assistance in such cases.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, stated that immediate action was taken when one of the victims contacted her team. They conducted tests, filed a police report, and, with the police, confronted the accused, who refused to open the gate but was eventually apprehended. Olaniran has been remanded at the Ogun State Command Headquarters for further investigation.
Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun condemned rape as a criminal offense and encouraged victims to report cases to the ministry for counseling and justice. He emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling the issue and called for a collective effort to condemn these acts and demand justice for the victims. Abiodun stressed the lasting physical, emotional, and mental trauma that rape inflicts on survivors and the importance of showing respect, empathy, and compassion to one another.
