Mayor Yemi Mobolade under investigation in US for plotting racist attack to win election

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade is facing scrutiny over alleged ties to Derrick Bernard, who was recently indicted for orchestrating a staged hate crime during Mobolade’s mayoral campaign.

Bernard, who is Black, allegedly vandalized a campaign sign with a racial slur and burned a cross in an incident authorities have labeled a hoax intended to garner sympathy and support for Mobolade’s candidacy. According to the indictment, Bernard communicated with Mobolade about the plan, including a message on the day of the incident predicting his victory.

While Mobolade initially denied any contact with Bernard in two FBI interviews, he later stated he could not recall the specifics of their interactions. The Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to prosecute the mayor, citing political and racial considerations.

In a statement, Mobolade rejected the allegations, claiming, “My family and I are victims of a hate crime… I had no knowledge, warning, or involvement in this reprehensible act.” He also accused politically motivated sources of spreading misinformation.

Local officials, including City Councilman Dave Donelson and County Commissioner Longinos Gonzalez Jr., have called for greater transparency. Donelson questioned whether Mobolade lied to federal investigators, while Mobolade’s office dismissed the claims as baseless, urging respect for the ongoing investigation.

Former prosecutor George Brauchler criticized Mobolade in a local publication, arguing that lying to the FBI is a serious offense and questioning why the mayor has not provided a clear denial of the allegations. Brauchler contended that the DOJ’s decision not to prosecute undermines public trust.

The controversy has intensified following reports that Bernard messaged Mobolade on election night to take credit for the win and later sought favors in return. As pressure mounts, local leaders and residents continue to demand accountability from the mayor.
