Mayor, three others found dead inside vehicle in Mexico

A mayor in Mexico’s central San Luis Potosi state, Jesús Eduardo Franco, a member of the ruling Morena party, was fatally shot on Sunday along with three others, local authorities confirmed.

The victims, including Franco, who was the mayor of Tancanhuitz municipality, were discovered dead inside a vehicle, according to a statement from the state prosecutor’s office.

“We deeply regret the death of our colleague Eduardo Franco, municipal president of Tancanhuitz,” Morena party president Rita Rodríguez wrote on X. She urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the killings and bring those responsible to justice.

This incident highlights the growing violence against local officials in Mexico, often linked to organized crime.

Just last month, local media reported the brutal murder of Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in southern Guerrero state. He was decapitated less than a week after taking office, and his head was left on top of a pickup truck.

Since the Mexican government began deploying the military to combat drug cartels in 2006, more than 450,000 people have been murdered, and thousands remain missing, according to official data.
