The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Yobe State has confirmed the apprehension of a 65-year-old man named Mohammed Baburam. He stands accused of chaining and starving his 40-year-old wife for an entire year in Potiskum.
According to DSC Bala Garba, the spokesperson for the command, Baburam was arrested following a tip-off from the Dabo-Aliyu Stadium area where both the suspect and his victim resided. Images of the chained woman, who is a mother of four, had gone viral in the state, leading to demands from residents and civil society groups for Baburam’s immediate arrest.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect only provided his wife with one meal per day. Baburam claimed that he had chained his wife due to her mental health issues.
The command has engaged forensic experts and a doctor to assess the health of the victim. After completing the investigation, the suspect will face legal charges in court.
