Gombe Zonal Office of The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has arrested one Sunday Ogar for allegedly diverting 15 bundles of mosquito net, each containing 50 pieces.
The nets were reportedly meant for distribution in 40 general hospitals in the Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State before they were diverted.
The spokesman for the anti-graft agency in the Gombe zonal office, Bello Bajoga, in a statement said the arrest was made on Tuesday after the EFCC received intelligence report that some nets meant for distribution had been diverted for sale.
Bagoja said, “The goods were handed over to the suspect by an employee of the National Malaria Control Unit, Gombe.”
He explained that while distributing the nets, the suspect got some and went round to scout for buyers, adding that a team of EFCC men arrested the culprit and recovered the nets.
“Investigation revealed that the goods were meant to be distributed to the public free of charge as part of the Federal Government’s rollback malaria initiative,” he said.
He noted that investigation was ongoing to identify few beneficiaries of the stolen nets, adding that they would be charged to court.
