The Lagos State government announced on Sunday that they have taken swift action to prevent the spread of Anthrax disease by confiscating, incinerating, and burying six infected animals. These cases were detected during a comprehensive surveillance of animals on Lagos Island and Agege.
As per the statement released by Mrs. Olatokunbo Emokpea, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, there have been no reported instances of human infection since the discovery of Anthrax disease in Lagos. The government has intensified surveillance efforts for both humans and animals to ensure public safety.
In response to the situation, the government has also stepped up free vaccination activities and monitoring processes. Animal owners are encouraged to participate in the inoculation exercise by bringing their herds forward for vaccination.
The statement emphasized that any cases of symptoms observed in animals should be immediately reported to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture’s Director of Veterinary Services. They can be reached via telephone at 08023427594 or 08180703010, or the Veterinary Epidemiologist can be contacted at 08023328244. By promptly reporting any suspected cases, the authorities can swiftly respond to potential outbreaks and safeguard public health.
