A nursing mother, Mrs Olufunmi Adeyemo, and her one-year-old baby were detained in police custody for stealing plantain from Agbowa Market in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, until the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, came to her rescue.
It was learned that the mother and her child were detained at the Agbowa Police Station, Ikorodu, after they were apprehended at the market by traders for the theft.
According to a source, on interrogation, the woman claimed that she stole after efforts to get food for herself and her baby failed.
After several days in detention, mother and child were, however, released when the state police boss, Owoseni, paid an unscheduled visit to the station yesterday.
While inspecting the cells and conditions of detainees at the station, the Commissioner was briefed on the woman’s offence.
Worried by the impact of the cell on the child, Owoseni ordered that the woman be released immediately.
Confirming the release, Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, said the commissioner who was uncomfortable with her health and offence, gave the lady N10,000.
According to Badmus, Owoseni directed the lady to sign an undertaking, promising not to engage in such act again.
It was gathered that Owoseni also inspected Itoikin Bridge, reported to be an access route for kidnappers terrorising the area.
