Late Friday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck Morocco, primarily affecting the city of Marrakesh and its surrounding areas. According to figures from the interior ministry, this devastating quake tragically claimed the lives of over 600 individuals.
The tremors were felt not only in Marrakesh but also in other coastal cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira. Terrified residents fled their homes in the middle of the night as buildings shook violently. Many people were in a state of shock and panic, with children crying and parents distraught. The earthquake resulted in widespread power outages and disrupted telephone networks, forcing people to remain outside for safety.
The updated figures indicated that the majority of the casualties occurred in Al-Haouz and Taroudant provinces, with additional deaths recorded in several other provinces, including Ouarzazate, Chichaoua, Azilal, Youssoufia, Marrakesh, Agadir, and the Casablanca area. In total, 329 people were injured, with 51 of them in critical condition, according to the ministry’s report.
