Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has been convicted and fined by a magistrate court in Abuja for violating COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.
Naira Marley was arraigned for a four-count charge by Magistrate Idayat Akanni.
The charges include violating Presidential ban on interstate travelling, not wearing of face mask contrary to the Presidential Order imposing compulsory wearing of face mask by all persons within Abuja the Federal Capital Territory, violating social distance order as well as violating dusk to dawn curfew in the territory.
He pleaded guilty to all charges against him and was fined the sum of N200,000 by Magistrate Idayat Akanni.
The singer and his manager Seyi Awonuga were earlier arraigned Thursday by the Lagos State Police Command.
Lagos State spokesman of police command Bala Elkana said Naira Marley and Awonuga committed an offence punishable under Section 58 Public Health Law, Ch. P16, Laws of Lagos State 2015.
They both pleaded guilty and was awarded a fine of N200,000 each by the presiding magistrate.
The singer first courted COVID-19 controversy after attending a party at the residence of actress Funke Akindele who was celebrating her husband’s birthday party, during a statewide lockdown.
Although Akindele and her husband were charged and convicted, Naira Marley was released after tendering a written apology to the Lagos State Government and signing an undertaking that he would comply with the government’s stay-at-home and social distancing directives; and that he would go into 14-day self-isolation, having attended a crowded birthday party.
