President Bola Tinubu has taken action regarding the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He has removed the suspended Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, and appointed Ola Olukoyede as the new Executive Chairman. Additionally, Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda has been named as the Secretary of the EFCC, with a renewable five-year term initially.
This decision is based on the powers granted to President Tinubu under section 2 (3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004, which authorizes him to appoint the Chairman and members of the Commission. The appointment of Ola Olukoyede as the Executive Chairman is for an initial four-year term, pending Senate confirmation.
Ola Olukoyede is a legal expert with over 22 years of experience in regulatory compliance, fraud management, and corporate intelligence. He has a substantial history with the EFCC, having served as Chief of Staff to the Executive Chairman from 2016 to 2018 and as the Commission’s Secretary from 2018 to 2023, meeting the statutory requirements for the Chairman’s appointment.
This appointment comes after the resignation of the suspended Executive Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa. President Bola Tinubu has also appointed Muhammad Hassan Hammajoda as the Secretary of the EFCC for an initial five-year term, pending Senate confirmation. Hammajoda is a public administrator with extensive experience in public finance management.
President Tinubu emphasizes the importance of the new EFCC leadership’s role in the renewed fight against corruption and the reformed institutional framework in the anti-corruption sector as part of his “Renewed Hope” agenda.
