Barely 24 hours after the Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun gave N5m cash gift and three bedroom bungalow to the winner of the Big Brother Naija show, Olamilekan Moshood Agbelesebioba a.k.a LAYCON, the governor has been receiving negative comments from people within and outside the state.
The latest condemnation is from the Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
In a statement issued by its chairman, Bamgbose Tomiwa, he faulted the governor’s gestures, describing it as “height of irresponsibility and recklessness.”
Abiodun had on Tuesday during Laycon’s visit to Abeokuta appointed him as the Youth Ambassador after giving him gifts.
Laycon, an indigene of the state won the N85 million grand prize of the reality show.
The association said, students of Tai Solarin University of Education under The Umbrella of ENACTUS, that won a global competition that had 128 teams from about 120 countries as participants, were more deserving of the governor’s gesture.
“If we are to break it down conservatively, a 3-bedroom apartment will cost N25m. If such money had been judiciously used as expected of a responsible government, it would have refurbished at least two primary health centres in the State,” it said.
Also, a lot of critics that took to social media, said that academic competition winners within the state have never been rewarded with reasonable gifts nor get the desired encouragement from state government but entertainment shows that celebrate little or no morals are being recognized at the detriment of sound academic performance(s).
