After spending 33 days in captivity, Dr. Asema Msuega, who was abducted by armed individuals in Benue state’s Ukum Local Government Area, has been released.
He was kidnapped on July 23, 2023, during a Malaria Supervision Mission. Despite his family’s inability to meet the hefty ransom demanded by his abductors, he was set free.
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Benue State branch, took action by issuing an indefinite strike ultimatum starting on August 25, 2023, demanding his release. Dr. Msuega, who hadn’t received a salary for eight months, continued providing services even while in captivity.
His release was confirmed by the NMA’s State Chairman, Dr. Ushakuma Anenga. The doctor was reportedly freed when his captors fled following pursuit by security forces around the Ayati-Imade Adamu Shitile border area of Ukum LGA.
