
A prominent politician and former presidential spokesperson, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has passed away.
A trained physician who co-founded Royal Cross Medical Centre, details of his death is still hazy, but family source has confirmed his death.
Aged 72, Okupe was Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan during their tenures as president.
He later became the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign. He stepped down from Obi’s campaign after being convicted of money laundering, and resigned from the Labour Party following the 2023 general election loss. He later became a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
A well known figure in the Nigerian political space, Okupe was the National Publicity Secretary of National Republican Convention (NRC).
He was once detained under General Sani Abacha and subsequently disqualified from participating in United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) primaries.
His took a shot at governorship election but lost at the primaries ticket under People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State to Otunba Gbenga Daniel who later won as governor.
