Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, and over 100 passengers narrowly avoided disaster when a Max Air aircraft experienced an engine fire shortly after taking off from Maiduguri International Airport.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the flight, bound for Abuja, suffered engine failure caused by a bird strike approximately 10 minutes into the journey. The pilot and crew skillfully executed an emergency landing back at Maiduguri Airport, preventing a catastrophe.
A Max Air staff member, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, stating: “The aircraft struck a bird mid-air shortly after takeoff, leading to an engine fire. The pilot acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all passengers.”
After the emergency landing, many passengers were reportedly shaken, with some opting to retrieve their luggage and cancel their travel plans. However, Max Air swiftly arranged for another aircraft from Kano to transport willing passengers, including the Deputy Governor, to Abuja.
The damaged aircraft remains grounded at Maiduguri International Airport, where it is undergoing extensive repairs. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Airport authorities have reassured the public of their unwavering commitment to passenger safety and commended the crew for their professionalism in managing the emergency.
