Former Nigerian boxer, Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Okorodudu, passed away at a private hospital in Lawandon, Lagos on Wednesday night. He had been bedridden for weeks due to a foot ulcer.
Okorodudu’s wife, Adenike, confirmed his death, but she mentioned that the hospital was refusing to release his body until the outstanding medical bill of N600,000 was settled. Okorodudu was 64 years old.
Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and the President of the West Africa Boxing Union, also confirmed the Olympian’s passing. Okorodudu represented Nigeria in the middleweight category at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
He achieved a gold medal at the Oluyole 1979 National Sports Festival in Ibadan. Okorodudu’s medical troubles began in 2020 when he developed a boil that affected his mobility.
He underwent a successful surgery at Dans Hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos. However, his health deteriorated again when he was diagnosed with a foot ulcer and suffered a stroke.
