A Makurdi Upper Area Court in Benue State, Nigeria, has ordered the remand of a 39-year-old man named Idris Abdullahi, who is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at gunpoint.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Mrs. Dooshima Ikpambese, ruled that Abdullahi, a resident of 39, Eri St., North Bank, be held at the Maximum Correctional Centre in Makurdi until the state director of public prosecutions provides further guidance on the case.
During the court proceedings, the magistrate declined the defendant’s plea on the grounds of jurisdiction. The case has been adjourned until July 20 for the next mention.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Veronica Shaagee, the case was transferred from C Division, North Bank, Makurdi to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi on June 27.
The report was initially made by Mr. Clement Gele of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, North Bank, Makurdi, on June 25. Gele alleged that Abdullahi forcibly defiled his granddaughter at gunpoint while she was on her way to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
The accused is charged with child defilement, which is a violation of Section 284 of the Penal Code, Law of Benue State, 2004.
